The mainstream media have become particularly adept at creating what Jay Rosen, Professor of Journalism at New York University, calls “Explainers”: reliable live blogs, bulletins, “walkthroughs”, or as Pepys Diary put it, “The Story So Far”. These allow people to get up to speed quickly with the latest events, and to understand them within a wider context.
